Matt, I appreciate what you're saying here about the feelings that come with a little bit of maturity and time passing while we live our lives. I think for me, the learning to differentiate between the two feelings (and not wanting to escape from my every day life), came when I was just as happy to be coming home to my same worn out sheets and mis matched mugs as I was to be disembarking in Berlin, taking in every sight and sound and feeling so thrilled to be there. It is this interesting place that reminds me of re-reading a favorite book - you're thrilled about the new details you find, but also love to get to the parts you know are there. Great newsletter - love to see some vacation happiness!
Exactly, Elea! That book analogy is perfect. Likewise, when I read a book I’ve read before, I remember the person I was when reading it that first time. This is an interesting way of noticing growth that I haven’t particularly considered before. And like you say about the sheets and mugs, yes. My last Europe trip, I had nothing really to come home to but a room in my parents house and the unknown. Now I have so much that I love ... even daily routines, which I hate admitting, but I love them. Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment :) catch you later and have a great day
Thanks so much, MS. Thank YOU for reading my ramblings and leaving this thoughtful comment. It’s hard to express how much I appreciate it. Have a great day :)
Interesting word too right? Vacate coming from the Latin vacatio meaning an exemption of service or respite from work. In New Zealand we use the word Holiday, which is probably less appropriate coming from holy day. Less appropriate because a number of our holidays have nothing to do with religion.
Thanks for including me in your weekly 3, Matt. And I’m glad you can enjoy your vacation while still appreciating what’s waiting for you at home. Bike with abandon!
I can closely relate to the transition between both vacation philosophies you described so fluently. Loved the descriptive detail of the sailfish story. It was cool you could reflect on the journey to Italy from two different vantage points in your life. I had a flashback of sneaking to the soft serve 🍦machine a thousand times with my sister on a family cruise vacation. Thank you for your distinct way of sharing your reflections and insight- it’s so enjoyable!

This is an inspiring view of life and the journeys we take while living it. Thanks for sharing, Matt.

Absolutely and interesting word, Luigi! Likewise with “holiday” and, another American favorite, “getaway.”
But your right, holiday is a weird one. It doesn’t apply very well to the New Zealand or European usage.

Grazie, Cheryl! I’ll follow your advice and bike my legs off.
Love this Matt. A philosophical piece that shares your innermost feelings. Well done!
