Mate, do you want the bad news, or the bad news?

OK I'll give you the bad news.

I'm twelve years older than you and it doesn't get any easier with age.

What doesn't? The impulsiveness and impatience? Well, I'm not sure I expected that it would. It seems a facet of me, for better or worse.

Expand full comment

Exactly, those two things. I always hoped I'd calm down with age. Get a bit wiser. Learn to stop and think of consequences. Learn that the grass isn't always greener. Start to appreciate things a bit more. But nah, none of that going on!

You're right. This is only my take (philosophy?) on humanity. I apologize if I've offended you in any way, Kris. I deeply appreciate your always-thoughtful comments.

Was a joke! 😆

This was like a mirror for me. More good laughs at things that are so true for me too. “An hour each way through life-threatening traffic” is quintessential Jeannie when she locks on something.

Jeannie! I'm glad to have found a kindred spirit out here in the Substackiverse. Lock on, and go get. I think this is a strength for us, even thought it sometimes seems to be the opposite. Let's -- somehow, someway -- leverage our impulsiveness! Thanks for stopping by and for the fun comment. Have a great weekend :)

I agree wholeheartedly on all counts : ) thanks, you too! ✨

I mentioned to my son who is a software architect.. (UVA) and actually makes hiring decisions and will only hire people who have solid B.S in computer science degrees. PERIOD. and we had a talk about Microsoft which has basically betrayed its core mission. He and a team of not inclusive yeah.. that means people,, mostly guys.. who are applied math programmers,. there are a couple ladies out there,, too. anyway, he and his team have had to spend a half year reading white papers and rewriting shitty code which Microsoft allowed .. the only thing which they support now is Powershell and one other.. (these guys are in the 40s plus with 15 years of REAL programming experience.. not java and the other source forge crap out there. What my point was to him.. was that in the old day (back when I was a DBA and minor programmer, that is not my degree, (bs in biochem) but the issue is the fact that the Smart phone technology and APPs are not cross compatible across multi platforms, example would be in the old days when programmers would migrate backward compatible software and offer support services.. but the good programmers could actually write the code to make it compatible across multi platforms. Because of the APPLE and GOOGLE and the people who are self taught and also laboring under the delusion that they are fact checkers, duh, .. or use Free Universities (not open source or Linux which is still good).. and actually think they can create APPs which work and are compatible with a Networked computer which is actually working through several layers of technology especially the API.. which allows for many users simultaneously, John, (that is his real name) said it won't be long before there is right now a full blown melt down because the core technology of the Smart phones and the APPs will never be fully integrated into the Desktop internet.. for many reasons .. example. This computer is on a hard wire but works through a multi layer of Verizon networks. I think you get what I am saying. There was a time I could sift through white papers and apply directly to what I was doing; John's main partner, Dave.. 20 years of programming in many languages (not the bs crap stuff) spends half his day reading the Whitepapers and has to go into the backend of the Programs to get them to work with the API that John had to personally test and deploy. so that is all I can say for now.. even that made my eye twitch.. xoxo best.. day.. keep up the good work. This is the way! Thanks for reading and for the encouragement.

I admit I was impressed by ability to explain how stuff works on Substack: however I need to get eye surgery and I can not see or read the white papers w/ instructions like I used to and then immediately apply it because all the Ad, Alerts. etc. allow or block while one is trying to read an article. :) and I don't use apps or smart phones for all those reasons. :)

More I'm sure but these are pretty challenging and inspiring to begin with... Cheers

Nice car. As for the writing experience, may I suggest you check out this very inspiring piece: https://joycecaroloates.substack.com/p/this-i-believe

As I wrote in the comments, I hope Substack makes this required reading for any and all aspiring writers.

Very interesting read. I'm wondering, but haven't concluded yet, whether all the "motives" for writing are captured in this. Thank you for sharing! You've given me something to think about. Have an great weekend :)

This story had me ‘pinned to the wall’!

Another well-written piece, and congratulations on getting the old MX-5. Is it one with pop-up headlights? I have never owned one but the MX-5 has always appealed to me as a fun little car, especially for those few days of the year in the UK when the top can be down. Mazda produced something the British car industry should have done. A reliable roadster!

Rust is a big problem here. Apparently with the old MX-5 it’s the drain holes that get blocked. Keep them clean and a good rustproofing and they should last forever (well nearly).

Next time you have an impulse at least you can take your MX-5 for a drive to take your mind off it.

Best wishes Matt.

Thanks so much for reading, Roland! And for your congratulations. Yes, it's the one with the pop-up headlights a.k.a. the best one! They are super fun cars. And your right, I'm surprised the British didn't get to it first, being the makers of the MG and the Triumph, both awesome cars.

In any case, I think the British do lay claim to the roadster in general. So I get the best of both worlds. Great and affordable Japanese design with a flavor of the British roadster spirit.

You're right about rust. I'm from CA where it wasn't an issue, but now that I'm in Illinois, it is. Luckily, this car is rust free, surprising for an Illinois car. I've cleaned the drain holes, and in general I plan to baby it. Sadly, that means keeping it in the garage through the winter months.

I like that advice, Roland! Take out my impulses on my little red car. Thank you.

Have an excellent weekend :)

Making a wild guess here: you are also chatty?

Actually, no. One of the reasons writing is nice. I prefer it over speech.

Enjoyed the read, Matt. Thank you.

Nice wheels. I have envy acne now in a nice red.

Congrats on the nab. Life is short.

Please pardon the potentially annoying yet probably obvious considerations: pushing compulsiveness—what would a character with OCD say? What would their "voice driven story" sound like, look like?

Oh. Nice touch with the Warhol. As you probably know, he understood the power of consumerism and managed to convince millions of people to consume his work.

Thank you, Steve! I really appreciate it. That's good, "envy acne in red."

I'm not sure I understand your comment about the character. But maybe I do? If so, yes, I think the voice I used in this piece would fit well for an OCD/impulsive/impatient character, with some slight modifications. Something like that would make a fun read!

And thanks on the Warhol comment, our resident materialism connoisseur.

It was a pleasure reading your thoughtful comments. Have an excellent weekend :)
